TYLER

“Morgan!” I keep running, fooling myself I can catch a four-by-four tearing the street at fifty miles per hour.

Huffing, hands on my knees, I finally give up.

Dammit, Morgan!

I’ve hurt her, I know, but she should’ve just grown up and listened to me.

Whatever it is, I’ve screwed up.

I lead men. It’s my job. I repel their egos all the time, but dealing with women’s feelings turns out to be impossible.

I pause, thinking about my options.

“Kevin!” I run to my neighbor’s house.

The sixty-year-old Army vet is standing on his porch, his rifle at the ready. No doubt, the neighborhood is aware of the shoot-out. “Tyler, are you okay?”

“I need your car.”

He briefly goes inside and then comes back to me with a key. “Take it.”

“Thanks, man!”

The police have arrived. A few of the officers have already approached the body of the man who dressed up like Scarf-face.

I keep going, zooming past the police cars crowding around the messed-up van, ignoring their signal to stop.

A second later, my phone rings. It’s Helena PD Captain Zander. He’s Red Mark’s ally in the police force, and it used to be Sam or Mark who liaised with him. Now that I’m the head of ops, it’s my responsibility. He’s a good guy, but at the moment, he’s very low on my priority list.

I answer his call anyway. “Yeah.”

“Ty, my man says you’re fleeing the scene. Something you wanna tell me?”

“I’ll give you my report, Zander. But here’s what I can tell you right now. I’m working on a case. The two dead men on my street were after my client. She’s run away because of them, and I have to find her.”

“Okay. You do that. I’ll talk to Mark.”

This is why I call him a good guy. He understands our operation, and he’s not one to hound us for deviating from protocols every now and then.

I’d like to back myself that I know Morgan, but trying to think like her has proven difficult. The first option she has right now is to fly with our chartered plane without me. Well, technically, it’s her flight. She paid for it.

“Cee,” I call Cora-Lee at Red Mark. “However you do it, get Helena airport to stop our chartered flight.”

“Right away.”

“The tower might not like it, but you’ve just got to try.”

“I’ve got this, Ty.”

“Stay out of trouble, okay?” I warn her. Cee is a computer whiz. I can see her going the back way to get things done for me. I just want to make sure the word ‘hack’ isn’t on her mind today.

Reading Cora-Lee is like interpreting sets of zeroes and ones—hard but readable. In contrast, trying to understand Morgan is like navigating a room filled with tangled threads.

When I get to the airport, the plane is still on the tarmac. The pilot and crew are ready, but there’s no sign of Morgan.

Fuck me!

I should’ve known. I didn’t even need to read her. She had told me about her strategy, that she often took the more discreet routes, even if it meant a longer journey.
